General information
The newly launched Thermostat mode of Bobbie allows you to set a target temperature of the water. It requires an installation of the temperature sensor in two ways: (1) In a dedicated temperature pocket (when available, also called “Aquastat” for some water heaters), or under the outer case and insulation, touching the water storage tank. The mode can be enabled from the settings page of the device in the MClimate Home app.
How to install Bobbie’s temperature sensor to allow Thermostat mode?
So far, the only way to control your Bobbie was to turn on or off the power supply to your water heater. Now we are introducing our new and free feature that allows you to monitor the water temperature and set a specific target temperature. To do so, you need to install Bobbie’s hot water temperature sensor (marked with red) either in a dedicated “temperature pocket” (also called “Aquastat” by some manufacturers) in your water heater OR under the insulation, touching the water storage tank.

How to install the sensor?
In case you have a water heater with a dedicated temperature sensor pocket, the steps are:
- Please insert Bobbie’s hot water temperature sensor (marked with red) in the pocket.
- Open MClimate Home app, navigate to Bobbie’s control screen, and tap on the Gear icon in the upper right corner to open the settings menu.
- Scroll down and switch from “Relay mode” to “Thermostat mode”.
- From the dropdown menu for the temperature sensor, choose your Bobbie device to finish the procedure.
In case your water heater DOES NOT have a dedicated temperature pocket, please read below:
WARNING! Executing the steps below may void your water heater warranty and we strongly recommend you to call an electrician to perform the installation.
WARNING! DO NOT INSERT THE BOBBIE’S TEMPERATURE SENSOR IN THE SAME PLACE AS THE WATER HEATER’S REGULAR THERMOSTAT!
In case you have a water heater without a dedicated temperature pocket:
We’ll start with some basic theory about electric storage water heaters.
As you can see in the picture, the water heater has an outer casing, typically a very thin layer of metal sheet, which protects the insulation. Below the insulation, there’s the water storage tank. It is the tank that contains the water.
- Steps:
Please consult with the manual (or the manufacturer) of the water heater prior to executing the installation! You must confirm the structural build of your water heater and what the insulation layer thickness is. - What you can do is drill a small hole in the outer casing using a 7-10mm drill. Be careful not to puncture or damage the water storage tank. We advise you to make this hole in the middle of your water heater.
- Once you’ve drilled the hole, you can use a thin screwdriver to make room in the insulation for Bobbie’s temperature sensor. You may need to remove some small pieces of the insulation so that the temperature sensor can fit inside.
- Insert the temperature sensor and ensure good physical contact with the water storage tank. Feel free to seal the hole with an appropriate seal (e.g. silicon).
- Open the MClimate Home app, navigate to Bobbie’s control screen, and tap on the Gear icon in the upper right corner to open the settings menu.
- Scroll down and switch from “Relay mode” to “Thermostat mode”.
- From the dropdown menu for the temperature sensor settings, choose your Bobbie device to finish the procedure.
Once you are done with all these steps, your Bobbie will start working in Thermostat mode. Now, you can set a desired target temperature and Bobbie will take actions to reach and maintain it.
